The Power of Stories

I allow to enter I have always gotten a little nervous speaking in front of groups, no worry how small they might be. I remember in fifth mark giving a presentation and having to brook behind the desk so the class couldn’t see my legs shaking. Not that the fluttering in my voice didn’t give it away.

Fortunately, the nervousness I now get is nowhere close-fisted that extreme, but I do still get nervous. I think it is only normal though and once I get into my presentation, it usually wears off swiftly and I begin to feel at ease with the circle I am speaking to.

Recently, I had an opportunity to talk about KMOM with a Kiwanis Agglomeration in Kansas City at the invitation of Dr. Karen Baker. Now I have had the unintentional to talk about KMOM a number of times over the former few years and there are really two approaches. The first is to unfold what the project is, what we do and the logistics behind it - the setup, teardown, funding, collaboration, etc. It’s the garbage that makes it happen. And for spreading the bulletin with other states that might want to do a similar programme, it’s a very good nuts and bolts way to resolve what KMOM does. But it’s a presentation I hatred to give. It’s not me. It’s not what inspires me.

So I threw that presentation away and before speaking to a Rotary Staff in Independence earlier this year, I rewrote it, focusing not on the “what we do”, but on the “why we do it.” That approximate focuses squarely on the patients and was the why and wherefore...
